Beginning Monday, Nov. 23, participating banks and credit unions will be selling “Now … More Than Ever” stickers in support of the 2010 United Way of Gordon County fundraising campaign.

The stickers will be available at Century Bank of Georgia, Element Funding, Family Savings Credit Union, LGE Credit Union, North Georgia National Bank, NorthSide Bank, Unity Bank, and Wachovia Bank through Dec. 1.

Employees of these financial institutions along with Georgia Bank and Trust and BB&T will be paying $5 to wear jeans or khakis to work on the Friday, Nov. 27. This is an effort to bring attention to the needs in Gordon County and provide an easy way for Gordon County residents to support United Way and the 19 agencies working right here in Gordon County.

Over the years, the financial institutions have been loyal supporters of United Way through pay-roll deduction campaigns, corporate gifts, and other fundraisers. This year participating banks want to do more. They will be selling “Now … More Than Ever” stickers for $1, with all funds going to United Way of Gordon County. Statistics provided by the Voluntary Action Center (VAC) for the month of October show how disparately Gordon County residents need and use the agencies. More than 900 individuals received food from the VAC food pantry in October.

This number increased by more than 300 from the month of September. As the economy worsens, the needs grow. Every morning calls come into the United Way office, the VAC, churches, and other helping agencies requesting assistance for utilities, rent, food, shelter, transportation, medication, etc. Although reports indicate the recession is over, the reality in Gordon County is that it is very much a factor.

According to United Way President Suzanne Roland, “Our recovery is slow and we need to help those who have been affected by the recession. The participating financial institutions are helping make it easy for those who would like to contribute. Please join the ‘Now … More Than Ever’ cam-paign from Nov. 23 to Dec. 1 at participating financial institutions.”

Remember, contributions given to United Way of Gordon County stay in Gordon County helping those in need. Contributions may also be mailed to United Way of Gordon County P.O. Box 486 Cal-houn, GA. 30703.

With all of the personal information that you have to give United Way, and even more confidential information that you have to give the banks, just how confidential do you think your bank account and spending is going to be now? WHO'S BAILING OUT WHOM? UNITED WAY OR THE BANKSTERS? OH, PLEASE! This is just another reason to STOP, SHOP & BANK ANYWHERE but Gordon County!
