According to State Trooper, Rodney Curtis, the bus was traveling north on Soldiers Path when the driver of a 1997 Nissan Sentra lost control of the vehicle and struck the bus head on.
“As of right now no speed can be determined,” said Curtis.
The Sentra driver, Hector Gabrill Caban, 27, or Plainville was cited with failure to maintain lanes. Curtis said he is not sure if Caban will be brought up on any criminal charges.
According to Superintendent of Gordon County Schools Bill McCown, the three children were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. “They complained of bumping their heads, and when little kids hit their head, you can’t ignore it. Any child who complained to the paramedic went.”
According to Gordon County Schools transporation director Geary L. Cooper all three children were released from Gordon Hospital within an hour.
Cooper has also reviewed video footage of the bus driver Ray Boynton at the time of the wreck.
"He did a very good job on the scene and he followed protocol," Cooper said. "I've been watching it the past two days just to see if there were areas he could improve and look for things like that."
There were 60 students on the bus.
McCown said that a fourth child went later that night, but was also treated and released. McCown said that he, Tolbert Elementary School Principal Kim Muse and Vice Principal Holly Sisson went to the hospital as soon as they learned of the accident.
Tolbert Elementary School is located on Hall Memorial Road in Resaca and has about 700 stu-dents. More details to follow.
