The Calhoun High School 2009-2010 debate team placed first at the Henry Grady Tournament this past weekend.

Debate coach Lane Bearden says he’s proud of his team.

“Two first place results at our first two in-state tournaments is very encouraging to all of the students,” Bearden said.

The tournament took place in Atlanta on Nov. 7.

The collective achievements of sophomores Kate Leggett and Lloyd Bearden earned Calhoun first place — known in debate as the sweepstakes award — where all of the points are tallied and a school is declared the overall tournament winner.

Calhoun’s sophomore duo defeated Marist, Sequoyah, Centennial and Wheeler debaters in the preliminary rounds.

Leggett and Bearden finished undefeated with a perfect 8-0 score. Meantime, Leggett was named the tournament’s top speaker.

Eighth-grade debater Ralem Eohmd, who recently advanced from the middle school to the high school team, also participated in the tourney.

Eohmd paired up with sophomore Thomas Kendrick and together, they pulled off additional wins for the team in the open division contest.

“Calhoun’s debate program often advances successful eighth-graders to the higher division as a method of training,” Bearden explained.

“Ralem was the first middle school student moved up to a high school competition this year, and (he) had an excellent tournament (finish),” the coach added.

The next competition for CHS debaters is the Fayette tournament on Nov. 21. Eighth-graders Taylor Gilbert and Katie Marshall will join the team and will compete in their first high school tournament.
