City Council members recently approved a beer package request from an applicant they pre-viously turned down.

The request, by Cleoptra Alvarez of LaCostena Mini Market, met opposition the first time around, in August, from Gary Goins of Forgiven Ink, a nearby tattoo parlor owner.

Goins said his objection to the license was based on his parlor’s status as a “family-oriented business” and said he has had to pick up beer cans from his parking lot before.

Council members originally denied the license request unanimously. This time, they each voted for it.

“I did not like the idea of a package store in a strip mall setting,” council member David Hammond said of his original dissenting vote. He said he voted for the request this time partially because he had confirmed the existence of one other local store selling alcohol in a similar setting.

Also during the Oct. 26 meeting, Calhoun City Council members:

- Approved application for a GEFA (Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority) loan of $1.5 million for phase 2 of the automated meter reader installation project.

- Readdressed and authorized a parade request from Mitzi Gaines, Peace in Young Life represen-tative, for Jan 18, 2010 in honor of Martin Luther King. The parade route extends from the hill on Neal Street and Martin Luther King Blvd. to Court Street to the courthouse downtown, onto Hicks Street, right onto Park Avenue and ends at the Calhoun Depot.

- Approved a parade request from Civil Air Patrol Commander Tim Mullens for the annual Veterans Day Parade Nov. 7 from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. The parade route begins at Maple Street and ends at BB&T Park downtown.

On the trash pickup fee that doubled, which has been swept under the rug -- it is good to see Baxter picking up trash in the city for a reduced rate. More residents should shop for this service as the city has decided to fill its coffers rather than just raising the milage rate a mill and let it be a city service. The appearance is they are taking care of their wealthy buddies.
