An overheated wire led to smoke and a burning smell at Sonoraville Middle School on Monday, but early reports indicate very little damage and no class interruptions.

According to Richard Cooper, Director of Emergency Management:

Gordon County E911 received a call about 6:42 this morning about smoke at the middle school. Firefighters arrived to discover smoke and an overheated wire from the power company. By 8:11 a.m., Cooper said all responders were back in service, except one, which stayed while the power company worked.

“There doesn’t appear to be any damage, expect to (the company’s) wires. It did stink the school up, though,” Cooper said.

He said the school had doors and windows opened to help with ventilation.

The phone lines to the school and Board of Education were busy.
