The regular monthly meeting didn't happen in Resaca, but the council instead turned it into an impromtu political forum. Because Mayor Sam Allen was out of town and Councilwoman Julia Baker was a no-show, no quorum was present.
However, three candidates for office were there -- incumbent Al Rosier, cadidate Mitch Reed and candidate Jerry Veasey.
"You have three candidates here to ask questions to," Mayor Pro-tem Jimmy Brown said.
Candidates fielded two big questions, including whether they supported a pouring license for the town.
All three candidates voiced the same opinion, that they would support the measure. Brown said he would talk to the town's attorney about the process of getting a referendum on the ballot.
The other question concerned the town's recent decision to close their police department and decision to pay $100,000 per year for a Sheriff's deputy to patrol the town for twelve hours a day.
Al Rosier, who voted to keep the original police department did not comment. Veseay said he felt the town needed more coverage. Reed told those present that he agreed with the contract on a temporary basis, but with the new parks being built and as the town grows, Resaca would eventually need its own police department.
Municipal elections are Nov. 3.
Re more police coverage in Resaca - they have PLENTY of existing equipment, resources, and manpower to cover Resaca without any increase of any kind from any resident any where in Gordon County!
Also, something else to think about. Why would Resaca need more police coverage? The Sheriff department is located there? They should have the best existing coverage in the county! The contract has to be best option. It keeps them eligble for the lost tax money. More Police would be a financial burden on Resaca.
