Reggie Glaze was recently inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame by the Georgia Chapter and was given the “Lifetime Service to Wrestling” award for his contribution to high school and college wrestling.

“It was very unbelievable to be honored and voted for by your peers,” said Glaze.

The banquet was hosted by the Georgia Chapter of the Nation Wrestling Hall of Fame at the Atlanta Hilton in Norcross. Over 400 people attended the event.

Glaze is currently officiating in his 35th season and he also coached for 23 years. He was the head coach at Calhoun High School from 1970-74 where he tutored two state champions, Ken Bunch and Keith Davis.

Glaze was joined at the awards banquet by several members of his Yellow Jackets team, including D.A. Richardson Keith Davis, Elliott Locklear and George Walraven. He was also joined by fellow Calhoun coach Barry Spector.

“I know that all the coaches here will agree with me that there will always be athletes that are special to you. I had such a group at Calhoun High School and they are represented here today, along with my fellow coach,” said Glaze in his acceptance speech. “Even though they are 50 [years old] or close to it these days, they will always be my boys.”

“It was quite an honor to know that they thought so much off me to show up in that weather [the banquet was held the weekend of the recent Atlanta flooding] ,” he added. “If I was going to war, these are the bunch of guys I would like to do it with.”

Glaze’s first coaching job came at Stephens County High School (1969-1970) shortly after graduating from the University of Georgia in 1967. He went on to coach at Cartersville (1978-1980, North Hall (1980-1982) and Southeast Whitfield (1982-89).

His career accomplishments include: three years officiating state duals tournaments, four years as President for Rome area IV Wrestling Official Association, three years officiating college matches, one year selected to officiate SEIWA College Tournament, seven years as Head Official for A and AA State Tournaments, four years officiating NSCA preseason and post season tournaments, two years representing GHSA at the National NFHS Wrestling Rules Meeting, two years as a GHSA Wrestling Rules Clinic Instructor and 2002-03 GHSA Wrestling Coach of the Year.

Glaze was also successful in other ventures including high school football where he was named the Chattanooga Free Press Tri-State Football Coach of the year

Glaze currently lives in Calhoun with his wife Carolyn Turner Glaze and has three children, Ginny G. Kirby, Grant Glaze and Griff Glaze. He also has five grandchildren.
