The days are numbered for the oldest operating bridge in Gordon County. Built in 1934, Polecat Creek Bridge, on County Line Road, has seen its share of pedestrian, horse, wagon and automobile traffic.

Replacement work on the steel-stringer bridge began last Monday.

Mohamed Arafa, Communications officer for GaDOT for Northwest Georgia confirmed that the bridge replacement is a $1.4 million state stimulus funds project. A wide two-lane bridge is scheduled to be constructed by May 2013. The project has been contracted to Cornett Bridge Inc. and work has already begun.

“They will also realign the road to avoid flooding. The area of construction will be approximately from the Hwy 225 side of Pole Cat Creek to the end of the dirt section of County Line Road,” said Barry Hice, Public Works director for Gordon County.

Hice said that the area would be closed to traffic until the new bridge is completed. Traffic coming from Hwy 225 will be rerouted along Spring Place Resaca/Mt. Zion Church Rd.
