Last Thursday was a big day for Yellow Jacket nation. Former Calhoun football standout and current Georgia Tech Kicker Scott Blair helped lead his team to a 30-27 victory over Clemson.

Blair nailed a 36-yard field goal with 57 seconds remaining in the game for the No. 15 ranked Yellow Jackets. The kick was his first game winner since joining the team two years ago.

“I was just trying to treat it like a normal kick, not psych myself out,” Blair said to the Associated Press. “I wasn’t paying attention to the score at all. I didn’t want to think at the time that it was a game winner. It was just another kick.”

Prior to the game winner, Blair also threw for his first career touchdown. Blair threw a somewhat unstable 34-yard pass to Demaryius Thomas, who was hanging out in bounds close to the sideline on what appeared to be a field goal attempt.

Blair connected on two preview field goal attempts, making him directly responsible for 15 of Tech’s 30 points in the game.

“I am extremely happy for Scott. He had a great game,” said CHS head coach Hal Lamb. “Scott is an excellent kicker but even a better person.”

“Maybe we should have played him at QB some,” Lamb concluded jokingly.

Blair was a preferred walk-on for the Yellow Jackets back in 2007 and quickly earned a spot on the roster taking over the kickoff duties.

In 2008, head coach Paul Johnson handed over all the kicking duties to Blair. He became the first player to handle both kicking and punting since Ron Rice in 1983.

During that season, Blair connected on 12-of-19 field goal attempts, including 12-of-13 from 40-yards or closer. He also averaged 38.9 yards per punt. Blair showed a knack for dishing out a hit as well, recording 10 last season.
