The Gordon County deputy sheriffs responded to a domestic disturbance call that led to two arrests Saturday night. Deputy sheriffs were dispatched to 164 John White Road in Resaca at approximately 6 p.m. on Aug. 29 regarding a domestic disturbance.

Responding deputies found Michael Lee Payne, 39, who had suffered an apparent knife wound to his upper torso. Payne was sent to Gordon Hospital by ambulance.

Detectives do not believe his injuries to be life threatening. The alleged assailant was deter-mined to be Payne’s stepson, Jeffrey Dale Chapman, 23.

According to detectives, Chapman fled the scene when authorities were called. Chapman, who authorities believed to be recently paroled from prison week, was arrested nearby a short time later by deputy sheriffs.

Investigating detectives recovered the weapon they believe was used in the assault near the scene. Chapman has been charged with Aggravated Assault. Payne will be charged with Battery. Detectives believe that alcohol consumption played a role in the incident.
