Friday, Aug. 7, marked the first day of classes for both city and county students.

Calhoun City Schools Central Office staff began the day riding buses and greeting students coming in to each school.

"Calhoun City Schools has had an excellent start to the 2009-2010 school year," reported Superintendent Michele Taylor.

"Our students were greeted with engaging activities and are eager to return on Monday. Changes in the registration process have helped us have a smooth beginning. I have only heard positive comments from parents, teachers and administrators about Central Registration and our Open Houses."

"Our theme this year is "Calhoun City Schools will win in 2009-2010—Let the Magic Begin." Today was truly magical. We can’t wait until next week," said Taylor.

Gordon County Schools Superintendent Bill McCown also reported a smooth opening day for the district.

"I’ve been on every campus today and the opening at each school went very well. I am very proud of all our schools but in particular I am very proud of Sonoraville Elementary School. The organization provided by Kelly Bumgardner, Sonoraville Elementary School principal, in coordination with Bruce Potts, Sonoraville High School principal and Allen Bowen, Sonoraville Middle School principal, made for a very smooth opening and a great first day at Sonoraville schools," said McCown.

"Sonoraville Elementary School was organized and ready to go. You would not know that this was their first day in existence as a school," he said.
