Calhoun-based Mohawk Industries Inc. will eliminate approximately 400 jobs from its carpet manufacturing plant in East Dublin, the (Dublin) Courier Herald reported Friday.

A Mohawk executive delivered a letter to the Dublin/Laurens Chamber of Commerce that said more than 50 percent of the plant’s jobs would be affected, according to the Courier Herald. The layoffs will not come immediately or all at once, according to the letter.

Plant operations will will be relocated to other Mohawk facilities from September 2009 through March 2010.

The Courier Herald estimates the East Dublin plant employs between 500 and 700 people. The layoffs will affect a full 2 percent of the local workforce.
