“We had pretty good numbers, especially for this time of year,” said Mashburn.
The camp stressed the basic fundamentals of the game, which include a lot of dribbling, passing, shooting and some defensive drills. The camp also divided up into two groups, which divided the older kids from the younger kids.
“We scale it (coaching) down a little bit and make it more basic for the younger group,” said Caudell. “With the older group we get a little more in depth.”
As for what the coaches wanted the kids to take home from the camp, Mashburn and Caudell were both preaching similar philosophies.
“The camp is a chance for the kids to come and learn to play the game but most importantly they need to enjoy themselves and hopefully that will be something they carry with them as they grow older,” said Mashburn.
“I just want the kids to learn some basic fundamentals, have fun, and learn to love the game,” added Caudell. “We try to show them some drills they can work on from home and we want them to be excited about becoming a Phoenix someday.”
Members of the Lady Phoenix basketball team helping Caudell out with the camp included Assistant Coach Randy Hays, Berkley Potts, Noelle Defoor, Vicki Smith and Alisha Ray.
Members of the Phoenix basketball team helping Mashburn out with the camp included Assistant Coach Jessie Martin, Greg Mulkey, Adolphus Allen, Justin Zachary and Tucker Blaylock.
