After beginning the season with a perfect 2-0 mark, the Calhoun Blue Barracudas ran into stiff competition as they traveled to duel meets with Fairyland and Ft. Oglethorpe.

“We always have battles with Fairyland,” said head coach George News. “Last year we each won a meet, so we knew it would probably be close.”

The ‘Cudas would fall to Fairyland this time, with a score of 301-449.

Zack Beeler led all Calhoun swimmers with 19 points. He finished first in five separate events including then boys 15-18 year old 50-freestyle, 100-intermediate medley, 50-fly, and both relays.

Beeler swims in the year-round program at Adairsville under News, which has enabled him to greatly improve his speed and endurance.

Because of the work, he was able to improve on his best butterfly time, taking almost a second off and lowering it to 30.33 seconds.

Lindsey Driggers was almost as perfect in winning four out of five 13-14 year old girls events. She came up just shy in the 100-IM.

Both Beeler and Driggers anchored the team’s winning free relay.

Joseph Nease, Bailey Mitchum, Lattie Reddoch, Micah Klingbeil, Will Beeler, Geana Fu-nes, Marah McEntyre, and John David Box all earned double digits points against Fairyland.

In the fourth meet of the season, against perennial favorite Ft. Oglethorpe, the Barracu-das put up a good fight but fell 327-435.

Nease and Grace Jones led all swimmers with 19 and 17 points respectively.

Nease, for the second time this summer, once again was victorious in all five of his events.

Jones was the best of the youngest 8-and-under age bracket, winning the breast, back-stroke and butterfly events, as well as helping her team come out on top in the free relay.

She, too would have had a perfect night had the medley relay team not been disqualified.

It was one of a handful of disqualifications over the course of the night, but Assistant Coach Rachel Giammarelle bragged on her young ‘Cudas for the way they have been able to “dramatically reduce the number of DQ’s” since the first event of the season.

“This is the first time many of our kids have ever been a part of a swim team, but they have been learning from their mistakes and getting better every week,” she added.

“The more we’re in the water, the better we get. I’m really proud of the way these kids are swimming their hearts out,” concluded News.

Besides Nease and Jones, a dozen swimmers had 10 or more points including Funes, Wimberly Burch, Mitchum, Bryant Mathis, Klingbeil, Andrew McEntyre, Allie Workman, Driggers, Maddox Parrott, and Krystal Funes.

The Barracudas are now 2-2 for the season.
