For the second week in a row Calhoun’s basketball programs held a youth camp at the high school gym.
This time the camp was run by boy’s head coach Casey Baxter and drew around 30 boys, 20 more than the previous week’s girl’s camp.
The basic purpose of the camp, explained by Baxter, was to teach the fundamentals of the game and provide fun while playing basketball.
“I hope they take some of the things they learn at the camp home with them and have fun doing it,” he said. “I want the kids to say ‘this is fun’ and that fun will hopefully lead them to want to play some day.”
Fundamentally, the camp focused on a lot of ball handling drills, form shooting, passing, dribbling, pivoting, jump shooting and taking a layup.
“We do simple stuff to get them working on their form right now,” said Baxter. “If I could pick one thing that the kids could get out of the camp that would be that the kids fall in love with them game of basketball.”
“It’s not realistic that in only four days they will get a whole lot better,” he added. “But if they learn the drills and have fun doing them then they will be more likely to take what they have learned home with them and practice.”
Baxter had several big time hoops plays, past and present, helping him with the camp this year. These players included 2008 graduate Tim Fortenberry, recent graduate Tyler Arnold, and CHS upcoming senior Brett Walraven.
Also helping with the camp were assistant coaches Eric Baxter and Vince Layson.
