The camp, which usually combines the boys program, normally draws numbers in the 40’s (20 boys and 20 girls on average), but with the split and because of several other events happening in the area, the number dwindled to 10.
The boys and girls camps were split this season
due to a scheduling conflict between the head coaches. Boys head coach Casey Baxter was scheduled
to be out of town this week and Pruett is scheduled
to go out of town next week. The boy’s camp will be held this coming week.
However, the low number provided a great opportunity for those in attendance.
”We almost have one worker for each kid and the kids are getting a lot of individual attention” said Pruett. “We can really concentrate working one-on-one with the kids and do some things we couldn’t do with a large group.”
The camp itself stressed the basic fundamentals
of the game such as ball handling, jump stops, proper shooting point and it also focused on trying to cut down the travelling.
“I asked my players before the camp what was the number one thing they felt like they needed to work on when they reached the high school level and they all said ball handling,” said Pruett. “It is so much more difficult for them at the high school level than what they are accustomed to.”
Pruett had several current players helping him out at this year’s camp. These players included
Danielle Phillips, Madison Walker, Payton Greeson, Callie Pruett, Shea Padgett and Shanta McDaniels.
