In what residents called “shameful” and “embarrassing,” the Resaca City Council failed to come to a decision on the fate of the town’s police department after two members of the council abruptly left a called meeting Thursday night.

Mayor Pro-Tem Jimmy Brown and Al Rosier left after a Brown made a motion, seconded by Rosier, to keep the police department.

They stormed out of the meeting before their motion could be voted on. The exodus occured after the council refused to allow a motion of disbanding the police department and negotiating a contract with the Sheriff’s Department as one motion.

Brown asked Councilwoman Julia Baker if she understood what the motion was for and she said yes. “I’m against keeping it(the police force),” she said.

Brown then rose and told Rosier, “Let’s go, there’s nothing left to vote on.”

Mayor Samuel Allen said if given the chance, he would have voted to close the police department, but felt that the vote would not be valid because they were suddenly left without a quorum.

“We really can’t even vote to end the meeting,” he said.

“I guess we’ll have to stay the night,” Councilwoman Jean Makonis said.

“We’re not going to run things this way,” said Allen. “We’ve been flimflamed.”

“This is an embarrasment,” said Missy Green, a Resaca resident.

“They were trying to confuse Miss Julia,” Virginia Long said about the 95-year-old councilwoman.

“They’ve been after her hard all day,” Allen said about Brown and Rosier.

This is the third meeting held to decide the fate of the po-lice department that the city has held.

Several Resaca Police officers have already left the force in anticipation of the closing, which the city says due to fi-nancial consideration. It costs the city about $500,000 a year to operate its own force. Sheriff Mitch Ralston has said it will cost $100,000 a year to contract the work to the Sheirff’s De-partment.

The next Resaca City Council meeting is Tuesday at 7 p.m.
