Two Gordon Central High School students have been charged with possession of a firearm in a school safety zone after a teacher found a 9 mm handgun wrapped in a bundle found under a gymnasium seat Thursday morning.

According to the Gordon County Sheriff’s

Office, responding officers determined that a number of students had witnessed another student acting suspiciously and attempting to hide a bundled object underneath a gymnasium seat.

Deputies and sheriff’s detectives questioned a number of students, and investigating officers believe that one juvenile brought the weapon to school to provide to the second juvenile. Detectives did not find any ammunition for the weapon, and have no reason to believe that anyone else was involved, or that there was any plan to harm anyone.

According to the sheriff’s office, the situation was handled quickly, and the school was not placed on lock down.

Sheriff Mitch Ralston praised both the school staff & the school resource officers for acting swiftly and effectively.
