The team took first place honors in boys solo, girls Trio, boys Quartet, boys extemporaneous speaking, girls extemporaneous speaking, boys dramatic interpretation, and girls dramatic interpretation. The Gordon Central team also took third place in boys essay, girls essay and girls solo.
“Winning first place awards you the chance to compete at the state meet this Saturday, March 16 in Warner Robins, Ga.,” said Kim Watters, Gordon Central literary coordinator.
Literary is sponsored by the Georgia High School Association and is one of two events sponsored for the arts and academics.
“Our team has a long tradition of excellence in the Literary event. Many teachers assist students in preparing for these events. We wish there were more opportunities for our students to compete in these type of events,” said Watters.
The Gordon Central Trio has won the region championship for the 12th straight year and hold five state championships in Trio since 2002. Many of the other events have had region champions and state awards as well.
The Gordon Central winners are: Sam Anderson, 1st place, Boys Extemporaneous Speaking; Heavenly Dacus, first place, Girls Extemporaneous speaking; Corey Frazieer, first place, Boys Dramatic Interpretation; Kaitlyn Morrell, first place, Girls Dramatic Interpretation; Josh Lance, first place Boys Solo; Satoria Ferguson, third place Girls Solo; Corey Frazier, third place, Boys Essay; Annah Pierce, third place Girls Essay; Bethany Burke, Elena Roberts and Virdi Ruiz, first place, Girls Trio; Josh Lance, Michael Tomasello, George Christian and Philip McCown, first place, Boys Quartet.
The team was coached by Kim Watters (music), Darlene Callan (dramatic interpretation), Lauren Fuquea (essay) and Renee Hughes (extemporaneous speaking).
The Region Literary event was facilitated at First Baptist Church of Calhoun by Kim Watters, Mike Earnest, Susan Skaggs, Mary Taylor, Reva Utz, and a host of region coaches and Gordon Central student helpers.
