The Sonoraville High School and Gordon Central High School FFA chapters in Calhoun, Georgia have been awarded $2,500 each as part of the FFA – Food for All Program. The nationwide program provides grant money to local FFA chapters to support year-long service-learning projects focused on developing and implementing sustainable hunger relief projects.

The Sonoraville High FFA plans to help fight hunger by growing 500 pounds of fresh produce (lettuce, tomatoes, spinach, strawberries, squash and cucumbers) which will be donated to the Sonoraville High School cafeteria by November, 2013, to be served in conjunction with regular school meals. A total of 900 plants will also be grown by FFA members consisting of cabbage, tomatoes and peppers and donated to the Glory Community Garden. FFA members will volunteer their time to deliver and transplant these vegetable plants into the garden plot.

Gordon Central High School FFA plans to fight hunger through a plan called “Warrior Sausage” which is designed to assist not only FFA members, but others in our local community. This project is designed to expand the existing Gordon Central High School FFA Hog Operation to students who normally may not have the opportunity to raise a hog for their Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) project. Three chapter hogs will be purchased through this program affording students the opportunity to learn about swine, as well as, the Pork Quality Assurance Program. Students will learn the process of daily care and feeding of swine. Gordon Central High School FFA members will donate 510 pounds of fresh sausage to the VAC or local Food Bank by November,2013.

Sonoraville FFA Advisor is Dr. Sara Clark. Gordon Central FFA Advisor is Mrs. Melissa Hubbard. Gordon County Young Farmers Instruction is Mrs. Trish Williams.
