“I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of so many individuals and organizations during this disaster,” United Way Executive Director Vickie Spence explained. “Over $21,500 has already been donated just to United Way of Gordon County including the funds collect by Gordon County government and more fund raisers are being held.”
“I know other agencies and organizations are also receiving contributions for victims as well. I have been even more amazed by the resilience of those affected by the tornado. They come into my office with a smile on their face determined to make things better. All are people in Gordon County and they make me feel ashamed for any complaint I might have,” explained Spence.
Initially, United Way funds were used to pay relocation fees-deposits, some motel bills, and in some cases the first month’s rent. As the disaster continued and residents were beginning to re-build, funds were needed for building supplies and in one case medication. Each victim has different needs and the funds have been available to address as much as possible. United Way will spend all the money received to help the victims. None of these funds will be used for any other reason. United Way will cover all administration costs so the donated funds will only be used for direct service for those individuals that are uninsured as the donors requested. These dollars are not included in our campaign results.
Also available to storm victims are landfill vouchers for household debris resulting from the storm. Santek Environmental has generously donated a limited amount of tonnage to those individuals who do not have insurance and need help paying the landfill fees.
The voucher program is set to expire on March 31. It was extended from March 1 to 31 due to the unusual amount of rain Gordon County has received since the tornado. The vouchers are available at the United Way office located at the Calhoun Depot.
One fund raiser set for Monday, March 25 is Chic-fil-A Spirit Night for United Way and Tornado Relief . Chic-fil-A contacted United Way and wanted to help. This is another way for the community to help and while feeding the family. All of these proceeds will go to tornado relief.
“A huge thank you goes to all who have contributed not only their dollars but their time and talents. Gordon County is a special place because of the great people who are willing to help others,” said Spence.
