Deputies arrested two residents for child abuse after a two-month joint investigation.

On Friday, March 1 arrest warrants were issued charging Raymond Smith Jr., 43, and Kelly Smith, 38, both of Calhoun with aggravated battery and cruelty to a child in the first degree.

The investigation was sparked when the sheriff’s office received a report of cruelty to a child involving a four-month-old infant that suffered a number of broken bones.

Authorities believe the incident took place between December 30, 2012 and January 5.

The investigation was a joint effort with the sheriff’s department and the Division of Family Services.

Authorities aren't releasing any more information at this time because the case is still open, but both defendants are in custody at the Gordon County Jail pending bond.
