The Ashworth Middle School PTSA Student Involvement Committee attended the PTSA Day at the Capitol on Wednesday, February 13. The students were part of more than 200 PTSA students in attendance from all areas of Georgia.

The first stop was at the Fulton County Government Center where students heard details of legislative bills that are presented for voting by senators and house representatives which directly affect Georgia students. They also heard from student leaders who opposed or supported bills with three to five minute speeches.

This portion of the event was summed up by the new Superintendant of DeKalb County Schools, Dr. Michael Thurman. He gave a presentation of how leaders make first impressions that students will not forget.

While at the capitol, the students had a chance to witness the legislative process by attending meetings at the House and Senate. Several students personally spoke to representatives from their district and other districts from around Georgia to find out what their day consists of and the duties of their job as public servants.

The PTSA Student Involvement Committee is a leadership development group that is involved in the Ashworth School community as well as the communities of Calhoun and Gordon County.

They are developing leadership skills as students to become future leaders in both their community and beyond.
