Gordon County is seeking input from residents on a proposed list of projects outlined to be completed during the next five years in the county.

Commissioners recently adjourned in a public meeting at Amacalola Falls State Park over the weekend to adjust, add or subtract a proposed list compiled by the County Administrator.

The proposed projects are listed under themes of transportation, intergovernmental coordination, general planning, economic development, natural and cultural resources, and community facilities and services.

All counties and municipalities within the county are legally required to submit project lists for the next five years to residents by way of public hearing.

Gordon County, as a single entity is offering a workshop for input on its proposed project list during a regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Commissioners Tuesday, March 5 at 5 p.m. in the board room of the Gordon County Administration Building.

The workshop will serve as an opportunity for residents to submit input and ideas for the proposed list. A complete list of the proposed projects can be found on the county government’s website.

Residents are encouraged to visit the site and access the four links containing the list proposed by the board. The county is welcoming any input during this public hearing workshop March 5 as required by state law.

The project lists must be completed and returned to the state, pending two state mandated public hearings by June 30. Currently, Fairmount and Gordon County are the only two governments that have submitted a proposed list. Plainville and Calhoun City governments have not confirmed a proposed list and both Resaca and Ranger public officials were unable to be reached for comment as of press time Thursday.

Some of the proposed projects for Gordon County include a $1.5 million project to replace the current animal shelter in 2017, coordinating with the city of Calhoun to increase the hotel, motel tax from 5 percent to 8 percent in 2013, creation of fire station and renovation and expansion of the Senior Citizens center, among others.

Some proposed projects outline by Fairmount include, but are not limited to constructing a new police department and city hall in 2013 as well as submitting application for a Safe Route to School program in 2015 and adopting Senior Housing Design Guidelines in 2016.

These are only some of the many proposed projects and residents will have the opportunity for input for Gordon County only as the hearing involves only the county’s proposed list. Fairmount had not set a public hearing date as of press time Thursday.
