“We haven’t met that threshold of dollar amount of uninsured damage so we don’t get that assistance,” said Cooper. “Most people that have been affected have insurance but there are so many out there that don’t.”
According to Cooper, the threshold must exceed $13 million in uninsured damages to receive public assistance funds for debris removal and rebuilding. Many assessments of monetary damages have not yet been completed and Cooper hopes that once the numbers and data continue to roll in, that Gordon will reach that mark for aid.
When Commissioner Becky Hood signed the state of state of emergency minutes after the tornado lifted, Cooper said state aid in the form of cleanup resources were offered, however GEMA does not assist with monetary assistance.
Though not confirmed as of press time Tuesday, Cooper feels strongly that the Small Business Association will declare assistance for Gordon homeowners in the form of low cost loans.
The website www.sba.gov will release information when that declaration is confirmed, according to Cooper.
