UPDATE:

More than 260 structures were impacted and eight people left injured in Gordon County after an EF3 tornado tore through the county Wednesday.

With estimated peak winds at 160 miles per hour, and more than 21 miles long both Bartow and Gordon Counties are now counting their losses.

Three survey crews from the National Weather service report that 268 structures in Gordon County were impacted by the storm, 202 of which were single-family homes, and 66 were mobile homes. Thirty structures were completely destroyed, 110 with major damages, and another 70 had minor damage.

According to the survey, the tornado began in Southwest Adairsville at approximately 11:12 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, before ending 14 miles from Calhoun near the Oakman community at 11:43 a.m.

The tornado lead to one fatality in Adairsville as well as 95 structures damaged, of which 31 were destroyed, 17 sustained major damage and 47 sustained minor damage. According to the report, most of the damage done in downtown Adairsville was a result of trees falling on homes in downtown Adairsville.





Bartow County



Most Significant Event: Tornado touchdown at approximately 11:12am in Adairsville.



Infrastructure Impact: Power outages; natural gas leaks; Interstate I-75 closed due to overturned/damaged vehicles, including an overturned tractor-trailer; Adairsville water treatment plant impacted with reduced supply (water main damage), resulting in a boil water advisory.



Property Damage: Damage to multiple structures in and around downtown Adairsville area, including some structural collapses.



Local Response: Initial response by local first responders focused on life safety: immediate search for and treatment of the injured; re-opening roadways; power restoration by providers; Bartow County declared a Local State of Emergency at 12:30pm.



State Response: GSAR Taskforce 6 completed search and rescue operations; Red Cross opening one shelter housing 20-30 residents at Manning Mill Youth Facility (Bartow County Parks and Recreation), 163-B Manning Mill Road, Adairsville; Salvation Army opening one food canteen; law enforcement personnel from GSP and DNR assisting with security operations.

Most Significant Event: Tornado touchdown in vicinity of Farmville and Sonoraville communities.



Infrastructure Impact: Power outages.



Property Damage: Damage to multiple structures in and around Farmville and Sonoraville communities, including some structural collapses with entrapment; Eight (8) poultry houses destroyed. Five (5) damage assessment teams to deploy on morning of 01/31.



Local Response: Initial response by local first responders focused on life safety: immediate search for and treatment of the injured; re-opening roadways; power restoration by providers; Gordon County declared a Local State of Emergency.



State Response: GSAR Taskforce 6 conducting search and rescue operations; Red Cross opening one shelter at Belmont Baptist Church, 126 West Belmont Drive, Calhoun; Salvation Army opening one food canteen; law enforcement personnel from GSP and DNR assisting with security operations; Agriculture assisting with poultry house incidents.
