MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) — Investigators in an Alabama standoff have named a school bus driver who was shot and killed as a gunman took a child off the bus.

Police, SWAT teams and negotiators were clustered at a rural property Wednesday where a man was believed to be holed up in an underground shelter after taking a 6-year-old student. The standoff started late Tuesday and continued Wednesday morning.

The Dale County Sheriff's Office named the victim as 66-year-old Charles Albert Poland, Jr. It said he had been a bus driver since 2009 for the Dale County Board of Education.
