JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — An Episcopal church in Jackson is asking the Wyoming diocese for permission to perform blessings for same-sex couples.

The Jackson Hole News and Guide reported Saturday (http://tinyurl.com/akbh2my ) St. John's Episcopal Church is not asking to perform same-sex marriages.

The Rev. Ken Asel says the blessing would be a recognition of established relationships. He says the move was not a loosening of values but an affirmation that everyone is blessed by God.

Asel told parishioners on Friday that the church expects a response from Bishop John Smylie early next month.

Mark Houser, coordinator for Jackson Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, says the blessing could help build momentum for initiatives in the Legislature and prompt discussions in the community.

He says it would also make Jackson more welcoming.
