A man dressed in blue lying on the ground to te side of the smaller blue truck is believed to be Ott. Witnesses who took this photo say they saw the man in blue taken out of the truck before authorities turned their attention to those inside the residence. Those with their hands up were witnesses to the incident, according to authorities, though no names have been released.
Prior to the shooting, two other incidents between Floyd County Police and Allen Eugene Ott occurred first on Monday Jan. 14 when a temporary protective order was filed after Ott made threats towards a victim at the same Kingston address.
Tuesday, Jan. 15, Ott was arrested at the residence and charged with terroristic threats and acts for threatening to kill the same victim and himself, according to the Floyd County Police incident report.
It is unclear at this time if the shooting and the two prior incidents are related.
Ott was released from the Floyd County Jail at 11:37 a.m. Wednesday Jan. 16, according to records, and a lookout for Ott was posted by Floyd County Police to Gordon County Sheriff’s deputies at approximately 2:30 p.m. the same day.
According to a press release from the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived on the scene on Dews Pond at approximately 3:50 p.m. and discovered Ott, in a stolen truck and armed.
After Ott received repeated commands to put his weapon down, he pointed his rifle at a deputy who shot him. Ott then proceeded to point his rifle at a second deputy who also shot him.
The two deputies who shot Ott are currently on paid administrative leave, per standard policy and procedure, while an investigation is underway by GBI authorities, according to Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston.
“This was an unfortunate incident where an individual threatened the deputies, placing them in fear for their lives and forced them to take action,” said Ralston. “It is a reminder of the dangers in such cases that our courageous officers face everyday.”
Ott was removed from the scene by ambulance and taken to Erlanger Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Special Agent James Harris, GBI lead investigator on the case, could not be reached as this issue went to press. The motif for Ott’s presence at the Dews Pond location is currently unknown as the victim from the two events prior was not present at the location during the incident.
