A truck driver was killed on Wednesday when the tractor-trailer he was driving left the roadway near exit 320 on I-75 and collided with a tree.

Authorities identified the man as Terry D. Loy, 59, of Ft. Wayne, Ind.

No one else was involved in the accident, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.

The state patrol reported that Loy was traveling “one mile north of the exit 320 entrance ramp, when his vehicle left the road on the right side, traveled into a ditch, struck the ditch and then crashed into a tree.”

First responders were called to the scene around 2:10 p.m. and worked to rescue Loy.

Initial reports said he was breathing but non-responsive.

Gordon County Deputy Coroner Bo Nicholson said Loy was pronounced dead at the scene around 3:07 p.m.

The tractor-trailer remained on its wheels following the accident, but began leaking fuel and first responders reported the truck was emblazoned with warning stickers.

No fire was reported. A hazardous materials team was called in to secure the area. Loy was hauling cleaning chemicals.

Following the accident, two right lanes of I-75 were closed for cleanup and traffic was backed up for several hours.

Loy’s body was sent to the GBI crime lab in Decatur for an autopsy. The state patrol said that alcohol did not play a part in the accident.

Loy’s truck was registered to Jat of Fort Wayne, according to Nicholson.

The company reports on its website that it has more than 100 “semi tractors” and more than 450 other types of cargo trucks and vans in its fleet.

Loy had 40-years of experience in the trucking industry, Nicholson said.

I've been hearing northbound traffic all afternoon on Hwy 41. That explains it. Thanks.
