Leroy William Taylor, 39, of 104 Twin Oak Drive, Calhoun is currently in the hospital after fleeing and attempting to elude police officers on a motorcycle on Thursday, Jan. 3.

The incident occurred around 4:26 p.m. after Calhoun Police officer Jason Stargell noticed Taylor driving a motorcycle erratically, according to the CPD incident report.

“I was parked stationary behind Pizza Hut off of Highway 53. I observed a black motorcycle turn off of Highway 53 onto Richardson Road and pass several cars in the central turn lane at a high rate of speed,” Stargell said.

Stargell attempted to pull Taylor over, but according to the report he sped away, so Stargell activated the siren and pursued Taylor.

Taylor then failed to stop for the stop sign at Belwood Road and Richardson Road. After turning onto Richardson road he crossed over into oncoming traffic and continued to accelerate at speeds exceeding 100 mph, according to the report.

“I continued to pursue and then observed the offender throw a plastic baggy onto the roadway. The baggy busted on the roadway and a white powdery substance scattered on the road,” Stargell said.

Taylor then caught up to traffic and started following an unknown vehicle too closely, and turned into the parking lot behind Pizza Hut, sped through and exited onto Highway 53, according to the report.

“The offender (Taylor) then failed to stop for the red light at Highway 53 at the I75 North bound off ramp, accelerated, passed several vehicles using the right turning lane at Highway 53 and Outlet Center Drive, crossed the gore and continued to accelerate on Highway 53 reaching speeds in excess of 140 mph,” Stargell said.

The chase continued with Taylor failing to maintain a lane, passing several vehicles in the curve at Highway 53 and Mason Road and continuing to accelerate and pass vehicles, while going into oncoming traffic at a high rate of speed.

The high-speed pursuit continued up until Taylor quickly decelerated, and according to the report, caused Stargell to swerve to prevent a rear end collision with him.

“I attempted to regain my lane of travel and the offender continued traveling west striking the eight rear door of my patrol vehicle,” Stargell said. “The offender lost control of his motorcycle, was ejected and landed in the ditch on the south edge of the roadway approximately 500 feet from Plainview Road.”

Taylor was transported to Gordon Hospital’s emergency room, and then later transferred to Erlanger Medical Center, where according to an Erlanger spokesperson he is currently in fair condition.

According to the report, the motorcycle was not registered in Taylor’s name, the tag belonged to the previous owner and there was no proof of insurance for the motorcycle. Officers also attempted to search for the unidentified substance, but nothing was located.

Taylor has been charged with driving on the wrong side of the roadway, two counts of failure to stop for a stop sign, failure to obey traffic control device, failure to maintain lane, failure to signal, driver to exercise due care, driving within the gore, following to closely, improper passing on the right, driving without motorcycle license, interference with government property, fleeing and attempting to elude, reckless driving and improper use of central turning lane.

It appears Nancey11 has been (self) appointed Moderator. “Making accusations?” Did you not read the reported officer’s account of the incident? “Name calling?” – my phrase “brings out the stupid” and runemdown’s “idiot” are accurate and seem generous to me given Mr. Taylor's actions. The only thing I find implausible about the whole thing is the good officer was parked behind the Pizza Hut and not the Donut Castle.

What ever happened to all the money that the taxpayers gave to the gov't for sophisticated radios in police cars so that high speed chases wouldn't be necessary? Remember the old phrase, you can outrun the police, but you can't outrun a radio. Everyone that spells Nancy with an "e" please stand up.

People need to know the real story before they start making accusations.. And name calling isn't the solution when you don't even know what your talking about.. This could be your family lets be a little bit more mature about this.

Are you saying the man who crashed the motorcycle isn't who the police say he is? Or are you saying the real story that led him to lead the police on a high speed chase that endangered the lives of innocent people will somehow exonerate him?

The officer should have just run right over the idiot when he slowed in front of him.

What is it about white powdery substances and two wheels that brings out the stupid in someone old enough to know better?
