In Hall County, the system's superintendent worked with the county sheriff to assign 33 deputies to the district's 33 schools for the first day back.
In Gwinnett County -- the state's largest school system -- police said officers were being assigned to schools to help prevent any type of copy-cat crime after the Connecticut shooting.
Hall County Superintendent William Schofield tells WSB-TV that school officials knew Wednesday, the day students there returned after the holiday break, would be a nervous day for parents when they brought their children to school.
