According to a press release from the Gordon County Sheriffs Office, the two people that were arrested in connection with the burglary and high-speed chase are Justin Lee Charles, age 18, of 152 Forest Heights Circle, Calhoun, and Tiffany Nichole Scoggins, age 18, of 325 Clyde Drive, Cedartown.
On Friday, November 30 around noon, deputy sheriffs responded to the report of a residential burglary at a private residence on Highway 225 near the Nickelsville community.
A witness who allegedly observed the burglars fleeing the scene provided a description to the deputies, and also provided a description of a red Jeep as the get away vehicle. This information was broadcast to other Sheriff’s Office personnel, and a plain clothed deputy saw a vehicle fitting the description traveling south on U.S. 41 between Calhoun and Resaca, according to the press release.
When the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle a chase ensued.
The plain clothed deputy pursued the Jeep for about two miles until other deputies in marked patrol cars took over the chase, which involved high speeds and dangerous maneuvers in and about the north area of Calhoun and the Newtown community, according to the press release.
Several deputies responded quickly to the area, cutting office escape routes. The pursuit ended when the suspect drove into a dead end street in an apartment complex on Newtown Road, crashing into a parked car.
The driver and passenger both attempted to run from the deputies on foot.
According to the press release, Charles, who was allegedly driving the Jeep knocked his female accomplice Scoggins down to the ground as he attempted to flee the scene.
Both suspects were quickly apprehended without further incident, according to the press release.
A deputy sheriff was slightly injured while pursuing the suspects on foot, and was treated and released from Gordon Hospital, according to the press release.
The Jeep was badly damaged, and was found to allegedly contain methamphetamine, illegal prescription drugs and electronic appliances that were believed to have been taken during the burglary, according to the press release.
Charles was charged with burglary, possession of Methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of hydrocodone, felony fleeing and attempting to elude officers and a number of other traffic-related offenses, according to the press release.
Scoggins was charged with burglary, possession of Methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of hydrocodone, and obstructing peace officers.
Both suspects are currently housed in the Gordon County jail, according to the press release.
“I’m pleased that my deputies swiftly resolved this case without injury to any innocent bystanders, and recovered the stolen property,” Sheriff Mitch Ralston said. “These two defendants will now face a jury of Gordon County citizens and answer for their actions.”
