On Thursday, Oct. 18 judges from the Region 5-AAA contest agreed unanimously, Gordon Central’s production, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” deserved first place.

In addition to the win, awards for Best Actor in the region, given to Corey Frazier in the role of Pseudolus, as well as four All-Star cast awards were given to members including Michael Tomasello, Brone Stewart, Kaitlyn Morrell and Josh Lance.

“The cast was elated. They are so excited about the opportunity to represent such a strong region,” said Director Kim Watters. “Other local schools who did well were Cartersville placing second, with two All-Star cast members Adairsville placing third, with two All-Star cast members and Sonoraville High placing fourth with Best Actress in the region, Mercedes McBride and All-Star cast member Madison Smith.”

Only the first place team advances to state. The AAA state competition will be held at Baldwin High School in Milledgeville on Saturday, Nov. 3, and Gordon Central is slated to step on stage at 3 p.m.

“We are really blessed to have such a talented group of individuals to direct. They show up early and leave late. They work hard and really bring their own ideas to the stage,” said Watters. “We see ourselves as a team. We have a tremendous group of parents and friends who help us out. Most importantly we have a warrior family who has really embraced us and supported the students. From ‘good luck’ signs to spirit tunnels on the day of competition, to teachers, students and administration showing up at competition. We are feeling the love for theater here at Gordon Central.”

The cast will run another series of community shows this weekend, Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. (with a $5.00 chili hot dog supper available from 5 to 7 p.m.) and Sunday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m.

All shows are $5 and tickets are available in advance by contacting Kim Watters at 706-879-5194 /email at kwatters@gcbe.org or some may be available at the door.

“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” is a tale of a slave who wishes to be free and is willing to do anything to achieve his freedom. He uses all devices to work for the good of himself, including lying, cheating, stealing and generally using and abusing all the others around him. Other colorful characters like a by the book slave, a bride salesman, a cluster of beautiful brides, theater players that change into many characters, an old man in search of his long lost children, an over the top military captain, an easily confused slave owner and his suspicious wife all equal a cast of characters like none you’ve seen before.
