Planes, trains and automobiles have nothing on the tractors at the sixth annual Gordon County Antique Engine and Tractor Show at the Cherokee Capital Fairgrounds, which took place this past Friday and Saturday.

Tractor club members Terri Reece, who traveled from Temple, Ga. and Joy Quinn, who traveled from Tunnel Hill, Ga. both enjoyed the event no matter how far they had to travel.

“It’s a lot of fun and we love the people,” said Reece, who drove her hot pink Ford tractor in Saturday’s parade.

The show brought people out from all over the state, including Betty Beegle, from Harris County, Ga. who was creating homemade rope using a machine more than 100 years old.

Beegle, says she got started in making homemade rope more than 30 years ago with her involvement in the local cub scouts in Harris County.

Antique engines as well as tractors could be heard throughout the fairgrounds, and other antique equipment such as fly wheels, which doubled as an air compressor for tractors as well as a water pump, according to Beegle.

The Gordon County Tractor club hosts several fundraisers and events throughout the year to raise money for agriculture students, and gives away one $1,500 scholarship each year to a local student involved in agriculture. The 2012 scholarship recipient was Lea Crump, who was featured in the show’s program book.

At the show, a picnic table was being raffled to raise money to put towards the scholarship, according to Beverly Primmer, Secretary for the club.

The event provided fun for the whole family as musical entertainment, food, a bouncy house, tractor races, parades and rides took place throughout the annual Friday and Saturday event.
