This also means it’s time for the annual Gordon County Antique Engine and Tractor Club Show at the Fairgrounds.
The Gordon County Antique Engine and Tractor Club will be holding its sixth annual show on October 19 through 20 at the Cherokee Capital Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. The club is a non-profit organization that is committed to keeping the rich heritage of agriculture alive in Gordon County.
There will be a parade of power by tractor exhibitors on Saturday at 11 a.m. and a pinto bean and cornbread lunch will follow at 11:30 a.m. Proceeds from the lunch support the $1,500 scholarship the club gives annually to deserving FFA or 4-H student.
There is no admission charge and all the activities offered are free. Food and crafts are the only expense to the public. There will be games and activates for the children. For the adults there will be wagon backing, wrench toss, skillet toss and many more fun things to participate in and see.
The tractors on display are from a different time when just the man and the machine worked long hours in the hot sun or inclement weather.
Later on someone thought of mounting an umbrella on the seat so the driver could be shielded from the sun and thought that was quite a breakthrough to add some comfort for the long hot day’s work.
Today’s tractors are equipped with air-conditioned cabs, high-end radios and GPS equipment. The Tractor Club participates in many local events such as the BBQ, Boogie and Blues, the Battle of Resaca, the Memorial Day Festival in Fairmount, Harvest Fest and the Christmas Parade of Lights. The club provides free hay rides for anyone who wants to experience some old time fun.
Admission is free, come spend a fun-filled family day at the Cherokee Capital Fairgrounds. Gates are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Antique engines and tractors our father, grandfathers and great-grandfathers used will be on display.
