First of three sentenced in connection with fatal home invasion

Brent Damon Carey 28, of 415 Old Boone Ford Road, Calhoun has been sentenced to 45-years in prison in connection with the murder of a Gordon County man last year.

Carey was convicted on Wednesday, Oct. 10 on charges ranging from armed robbery to false imprisonment following a home invasion that resulted in the death of Jason David Hammond, 42, of 394 Union Grove Church Road on Saturday, November 5, 2011.

Carey was not prosecuted on five counts that he had originally been indicted on, including: murder, three counts of felony murder and kidnapping.

According to the Superior Court of Gordon County’s final disposition, Carey pleaded guilty to three counts of armed robbery, two counts of burglary, three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of false imprisonment, one count of cruelty to children in the third degree, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Carey received a total of 45-years in prison, which included 20 years for armed robbery and burglary, 10 years for aggravated assault, 10 years for false imprisonment, 12 months for cruelty to children in the third degree and five years for the possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession by a convicted felon.

Carey has been in jail since November 5, 2011 and will be credited for time served.

The other two men tried in connection with the home invasion, Claude Travis Simpson and Deounta Demetrius Curtis, have not yet been sentenced.

No information on sentencing was available as of press time Thursday.

District attorney Joseph Campbell could not be reached for comment on Thursday.
