COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is preparing for his second debate with President Barack Obama but taking time to tell voters in Ohio that enthusiasm for him is surging both in this critical state and across the country.

Obama was hunkering down Saturday in Virginia to go over the game plan for the town-hall debate with Romney. But his weekly radio and Internet address on Saturday spoke of an industry that's critical to Ohio, another battleground state and perhaps the most important to his Republican opponent's White House hopes.

"We refused to throw in the towel and do nothing. We refused to let Detroit go bankrupt," Obama said in the address. "GM is back. Ford and Chrysler are growing again. Together, our auto industry has created nearly a quarter of a million new jobs right here in America."

Romney opposed using government funds to help the auto industry go through bankruptcy. Many analysts believe the industry would not have survived if it had relied on private investment for rescue. It's an issue that has dogged Romney in Ohio, where numerous auto parts suppliers benefited from the survival of the big three automakers.

The Obama campaign also released a new TV ad narrated by actor Morgan Freeman noting the challenges Obama inherited and highlighting the president's successes, including saving jobs for American autoworkers and killing Osama bin Laden.

Romney is concluding a week of campaign rallies that saw him drawing larger, more excited crowds than he has through the fall campaign. More than 10,000 people turned out to several rallies, with the campaign saying that more people were signing up to attend events since Romney's strong debate performance last week in Nevada.

"I've had the fun of going back and forth across Ohio, and this week I was also in Florida and Iowa, I was in North Carolina and Virginia. And you know what? There is a growing crescendo of enthusiasm," Romney told a crowd of thousands at a sunset rally Friday in Lancaster, south of Columbus, where he and running mate Paul Ryan appeared together. "There's more energy and passion. People are getting behind this campaign. We are taking back this country."

Saturday will be the fourth of the last five days Romney will spend campaigning in this industrial, Midwestern state — with 18 electoral votes, it's critical to his hopes of winning the White House. His campaign swing comes as he and Republicans criticize Obama for the handling of the terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Romney accused Vice President Joe Biden of "doubling down on denial" concerning security at the diplomatic post where the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed. During the vice presidential debate Thursday, Biden said "we weren't told" about the Benghazi consulate's requests for additional security. Although a State Department official told Congress on Wednesday about the requests, the White House said Friday that Biden was speaking just for himself and for the president.

"The vice president directly contradicted the sworn testimony of State Department officials," said Romney, who was eager to stoke a controversy that has flared periodically since the attack. "American citizens have a right to know just what's going on. And we're going to find out."

Romney plans to spend Saturday morning at a hotel outside Columbus, where he'll meet with top advisers and get ready for his showdown with Obama in Hempstead, N.Y., on Tuesday. He returns to Massachusetts in the evening but first makes two campaign stops in Ohio.

After his widely panned performance in the first presidential debate, polls show Obama still holds a slim edge in Ohio. The state is crucial for Romney because his path to winning the 270 electoral college votes he needs is far narrower if he can't win Ohio. Losing here would mean he'd have to win almost all of the other up-for-grabs battleground states.

Obama was in Ohio this week, too, but he was spending the weekend in Williamsburg, Va., preparing for the debate. The president has acknowledged he needs to turn in a stronger performance when the two meet again.

Obama and top aides plan hours of practice sessions ahead of the town hall-style event, including some mock exchanges with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who is playing the role of Romney.

Campaign officials sought to keep details of Obama's preparations secret. But they said the president was working on being more aggressive in responding to Romney and calling the Republican out on issues as well as pointing out what they maintain are Romney's true positions.

While Obama has no public events planned in Virginia over the next three days, his mere presence in the state will drive some local news coverage. And he may make unscheduled visits in the Williamsburg area.

The president practiced for the first debate in Nevada, another battleground state.

This is the complete list of faltering or bankrupt green-energy companies that received our taxpayer dollars from the Obama administration’s green energy initiative, which was paid from the stimulus funds. The * denotes companies that have already filed for bankruptcy with others soon to follow. It is not a proper function of government to choose which industries/companies are the winners or losers. In the Anointed One’s case, to quote Saint Mittens: the president has chosen the losers.

WT - Maybe a dose of this will help your little malady. Renewables such as wind, solar or hamsters on a flywheel are currently NOT economically viable. What to do??? During his campagin in 2008, this president said gasoline prices needed to be boosted to the levels in Europe in an effort to make renewables more viable and force American citizens to drive less and look elsewhere for their energy needs. As he said: “Under my plan....electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.”

Furthermore, Obama wants you to believe oil production under his administration is at an all time high, yet permits and leases issued for public lands are less than half than during President Clinton’s terms. North America is literally floating on a sea of fossil fuels in one form or another; enough to last for centuries, and what does the Anointed One do, he vetoed the Keystone pipeline. Obama wants you to believe he is powerless to stop the rise in gasoline prices, yet his actions and inactions have created the price crisis. To think otherwise is either willful ignorance or an obvious overdose on unicorns and rainbows.

I am SO sick of ignorant folks blaming ANY president, Democrat or Republican, for high gasoline prices. And I loathe any President or nominee who says they can do something about it. They CAN'T. You see, oil is a GLOBAL commodity, therefore prices are set by supply and demand, on a global scale.

Energy Independent? Not on fossil fuels. Renewables, yes, oil/coal, NO. What do you people think is going to happen? Do you really think that a President would prohibit Americans from selling their product to the highest bidder? Do you really think a President would outlaw all exports and tell Big Oil they can only sell U.S goods to U.S consumers at much lower prices than they could get elsewhere? Is A President going to force wells to pump, when the owners dont want to? Is the President going to force refineries to refine when they dont want to? Ain't Gonna Happen!!

That just speaks to the mindset of folks who think the world is only as big as the USA, or Gordon County for some folks.

If the Anointed One (otherwise known as the Campaigner In Chief) has "given his all" for this country, he phoned it in from the golf course!

Question: How does one know their views are accurate?

Answer: If they are precisely opposite of Morn’s, consider yourself an A student.

Karmazone, haven't you learned by now that you can't fix stupid? These people would vote for Romney if he stood on the capitol steps and told them he would enact martial law the day after he took office. They are proudly, willfully ignorant and resist any efforts at education and enlightenment. Romney/ Ryan have lied from day one, lied in their debates, said one thing in the morning and another in the afternoon completely contradicting themselves and these fools will vote for them anyway. The house, controlled by republicans, has blocked legislation to create jobs, even for vets and do so proudly under the proudly stated objective of making Obama a one term president. They are ignorant, nay stupid, and are proud about it. They would rather live in abject stupidity rather than learn a single fact, they are pitiable, they are ill educated or uneducated, have no christian values despite calling themselves christian. They are the most despicable, human beings to ever live and they are proud that they will vote to expel a man who has given his all trying to pull this country out of the depths of a republican induced hell. They are to be scorned and talked to like children because they cannot comprehend big words such as compassion and humanity. They are disgusting and ignorant and want the rest of the world to be so, under romney/ ryan they will have a great start on turning Americans into willing sheep led to a slaughter of constitutional rights. Feel sorry for them, they are too stupid to know how sad they really are and how inhuman and hateful.

Sorry but I feel anyone would vote for Obama are the truly stupid ones! I will not support someone who is definitely for abortion. Obama is clearly a liar and has lied about the killings of our ambassador and three other Americans for the sake of his being re-elected. He has no concept of what he needs to do to stimulate the economy and create jobs. In my opinion, he is an Islam and he is not good for our country at all. I am tired of Bush being blamed all the time. Our debt has grown tremendously under Obama, gas prices are skyrocketing, don't have insurance and checked on Obamacare (terribly expensive), took billions of our money out of SS and put it in Obamacare, and would rather be with the actors in Hollywood than to be with the Israeli president. You are truly lacking in intelligence and must love the taste of Kool-aid because you are truly full of it!

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, lived a group of people known as Neanderthals. These individuals were hard workers, spending many hours hunting and even more hours gathering nuts and berries. The group flourished and prospered, and their numbers increased.

Along came a new leader, one chosen because of his gruntorial skills. Chief Bullcrack Oblather told the villagers, "Gather together all of your furs and nuts and berries. We are going to pool them together for the common good. I, Bullcrack Oblather, will see to the proper dispensing of these items, for the Great Spirit, Marxgitsu, hath shown me a vision in my sleep."

Many adoring Neanderthals did what Bullcrack had ordered....several opposed. "You didn''t build that cave," shouted Bullcrack. "Someone else helped you build it" ....and the village idiots cheered.

Time quickly passed..The most skilled hunters never hunted...The most skilled cave carvers never carved,,,,The most skilled with furs never treated the pelts...And no one picked the nuts or berries...After all, why work when Bullcrack will provide everything, supposedly, to you for free?

End result...Extinction.

If Obama is the answer, I don't want to hear the question.

Obama has, from the start, tried to divide American's...He goes out of his way to demonize those that are productive. He was "playing to the crowd," thumping his chest, and putting out his "share the wealth" socialist/communist crap.

Tell it like it is...he was playing partisan politics, attacking the successful, and trying to pander to his constituents.

Jealousy has been with us since Cain slew Abel. Even the foolish grasshopper desired what the ant worked and saved up all summer for. Every revolution...from the French, the Communist Chinese, the Russians, the rise of Hitler, you name it...came about because of the same garbage that Obama spews out of his mouth daily. If he's a Marxist, a Socialist, or even a Capitalist...so be it..that's fine. But don't posture and pretend to be something that you are not.

2/3rds of the Forbes 500 list of American millionaires started out poor, worked their butts off, and achieved success on their own....It was THEIR idea...THEIR plan...THEIR hard work...THEIR investment in time and effort. Obama using his "You didn't build that" spoke volumes about the man.

This idea that the guy that swept the floors at Sam Waltons first WalMart "built it" instead of Sam is nothing but Socialist propaganda.

Are you serious? You do realize that Romney, Ryan, Bachmann,Palin and the like serve to divide America just as much as Obama and the Democrats do, don't you? All politicians do is pander to their bases.
