Calhoun VFW Post 5376 and Ladies Auxiliary held a POW/MIA recognition and flag retirement ceremony at the post on Saturday, September 22.

POW/MIA Day is observed on the third Friday in September to honor the sacrifices made by all prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action.

Currently Georgia has 35 servicemen who haven’t come home and are still unaccounted for.

As a tribute to those who have served and all POWs and MIAs, the VFW maintains a Missing Man Table at the post throughout the year. Narrators for the ceremonies were former post Commander Kenneth Fleming and Ladies Auxiliary President Janet Francis.

Sonoraville High School JROTC cadets under the direction of MSG Sean Allen and SSG Patrick Gainey did retiring of the flags. The cadets participating were Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Spencer Smith and Cadet Major Austin Cook.

To conclude the ceremony Bugler Cadet First Sergeant Kayla Veit played taps.
