Students at Gordon Central High School were recently evacuated due to a possible gas leak, according to Superintendent Dr. Bill McCown.

According to McCown, Principal Scott McClanahan received a report of a gas smell in the Vocational automotive area of the school, and as a precaution evacuated students to the stadium across the street, at approximately 10:15 a.m.

"In the event it is hazardous, we would transport the students to an alternate site," said McCown.

According to McCown, 911 was contacted, who dispatched the Calhoun City Fire Department to the scene.

The school was cleared for reentry by students around 10:25 a.m. according to McCown.

"It appears to have been a heater in the shop area of the school firing up for the first time this year, which gave off the odor," said McCown.

I am a Teacher and Coach at Gordon Central HS and the students, teachers and office staff did a GREAT job with this situation. We had the entire building clear within 3 minutes. the students were well behaved and many teachers took on duties that made the evacuation work very smoothly. The students even began to do the wave and almost started a student lead pep rally for our football team that was playing LFO later that day. Our office workers set up in the ticket booth to make checking in or out much easier for students and Parents and we made announcements over the stadium speakers. As I said before GCHS students and staff did a wonderful job with a bad situation. Always proud to be a Warrior.
