A native of Gordon County Georgia, Mr. Phillips was born on September 5, 1931, the son of the late Andrew T. and Myrtle Phillips. He attended Oostanaula School and was a Korean War veteran having served in the United States Navy. Mr. Phillips had been a resident of Rome for 55 years and was a founding member and Deacon of the Rome Church of Christ. Prior to his retirement in 1996 he was associated with Inland of Rome for 39 years. A.T. served as President of Local #804 and as President of the Pipefitters Local. He loved his grandchildren, fishing and gardening. Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Blalock and by a brother, Max Phillips.
Survivors include his wife, Mary L. Holcomb Phillips to whom he was married on September 21, 1957; a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Randy Lacey of Cave Spring, Georgia; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Phillips of Rome and Gary and Lynna Phillips of Rome; two grandchildren, Sidney and Reese Lacey; two sisters, Virginia Brown of Calhoun, and Patsy Crump (J.C.) of Sumpter, S.C.; two brothers, Richard Phillips (Kathryn) of Rome and Tom Phillips (Pauline) of Rome. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for A.T. Phillips, Jr. will be held on Tuesday afternoon, September 4, 2012 at 3 p.m. at The Rome Church of Christ with Minster Steve Rogers and Minister David O’Connell officiating. Interment followed in the family lot of Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Phillips remained at Fred Talley’s Parkview Chapel where the family received friends Monday afternoon, September 3, 2012 from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. At other hours they were at the residence.
The following served as active pallbearers, Roger Kirby, Tommy Callan, Doug Gresham, Ron Dasher, Larry Tucker and Vic Tinney. Linden Pierce served as an honorary pallbearer.
