This year, the Gordon Hospital Foundation is hoping that its Sixth Annual Golf Classic scheduled for Friday, October 26 at Barnsley Gardens in Adairsville, Ga., can go a long way in helping local cancer patients. That’s because the tournament funds are being set aside to help fund the new radiation therapy center being built on the hospital’s campus.

Almost everyone in the world has been touched in some way by cancer. Whether it’s a family member or friend or you have been a patient, it would be hard pressed to find someone who has no understanding of the devastation that the diagnosis can trigger

“Right now, patients needing pinpoint radiation therapy to treat tumors are having to go out of town for this service,” says Judy Jackson, director of development services for Gordon Hospital. “It’s hard on them and the family, because they have to arrange transportation and then travel when they probably don’t feel well. By adding this service line, they can have the treatment right here at Gordon Hospital minutes from their own home.”

Jackson adds. “This will be our sixth year, and we are excited about having another great golf event. We think the setting, and the time of year will be a big draw for area golfers, and of course, the cause is so worthwhile and will benefit our entire community.”

The location of the tournament, Barnsley Gardens, is one of the most prestigious courses in this area. The General, as the course as been dubbed, is a Jim Fazio-designed championship golf course. Ranked number five in the state by Golf Week (public and resort courses, 2007) this par 72 layout is a true test for golfers of any skill level.

In addition, the course has been ranked in the top 20 in the state by Golf Digest for three years running.

“We know that the economy is tight, but this is a great cause, and it’s a great day of golf and a way to improve the healthcare of our community with every stroke,” says Jackson.

The cost of entry in the tournament is $150 per player. Space is limited to 120 golfers.
