In Tuesday’s runoff elections two positioned were filled, and one is still to come.

The runoff election determined Grant Walraven as Clerk of Superior Court, and Kevin Cunningham as County Commissioner District five seat.

All the new elected officials will be sworn into office sometime in January 2013, according to Shea Hicks of the Gordon County Board of Election.

Kevin Cunningham along with Norris Sexton and Jeff Gazaway will attend a three day conference in Athens for first time sitting commissioners, hosted by the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG), said Dowling.

The runoffs also determined that Ricky Silvers will be the Republican candidate in the upcoming November General Election.

Walraven removes Brannon from Clerk of Court seat

After a close battle for votes on Tuesday Grant Walraven came out victorious.

The determining votes came down to the final precinct in Tuesday’s runoff election between Incumbent Brian Brannon and competitor Grant Walraven.

“It feels good, we put a lot of work and effort in this and it has been a great experience,” Walraven said.

Walraven was surrounded by the people who have helped him throughout the entire process when he got the news he had won the election.

“We were at mamas home cooking with 75 to 100 people that help with the campaign,” Walraven said.

The election process can take its toll on people financially and mentally, but after it is over the feelings can be very rewarding.

“The excitement of knowing you worked so hard for something, and it came out the way you wanted feels great,” Walraven said. “Knowing the people of Gordon County have confidence in you is remarkable.”

Walraven never condoned his opponent’s work in the office of Clerk of Superior Court. Walraven humbly commended Brannon’s efforts, and wants to continue the efficiency brought to the office.

“I want to continue to operate the office in an efficient manner to better serve the people of Gordon County,” Walraven said.

Walraven commends everyone that stood behind him in this process, and is thankful for the support.

“The biggest thing is to thank everyone,” said Walraven.

Cunningham takes County Commission District five seat

After a long three month battle for the seat of County Commissioner District five Kevin Cunningham came out on top.

After a mere 316 votes determined the winner of Tuesday’s County Commissioner District five runoff Cunningham barely surpassed Tom D. Bledsoe, Sr.

Before commenting on the triumph, Cunningham requested a brief moment to call his wife and share the news first.

“I appreciate everyone that came out and voted and I look forward to working with the commissioners and the department heads,” Cunningham said.

After the close three month race Cunningham said all he feels is a relief.

“It has been a long three months, and a long day,” said Cunningham. “I look forward to working with everybody and trying to serve and trying to help.”

Cunningham has a progressive attitude towards his newly elected seat.

“Moving forward with the county,” Cunningham said is in his plans.

After hearing the news he had won the election Cunningham wanted to thank everyone, no matter which way they voted.

“I just want to thank everyone that came out supported me and voted,” said Cunningham. “No matter which way you voted I appreciate the people that came out and voted, because it really does make a difference.”

Silvers not through yet

Ricky Silvers finished 640 votes ahead of the incumbent Judge John C. Leggett in Tuesday’s runoff elections.

The battle isn’t over for Silvers just yet though.

The general election will be in November, and will be between Silvers the Republican candidate, and Scott Haynes the Democratic candidate.

Both Haynes and Silvers were not available for comments.
