Locals are invited to attend the beautiful Lightning P Ranch in Resaca for two exciting days of barrel racing and roping action at the third annual Meagan McCain Memorial today and Sunday to help raise money for a great cause.

The 2011 Meagan McCain Memorial raised $10,000 for scholarships and impaired driving prevention.

McCain was killed by a drunk driver in 2009 just a week short of her 20th birthday.

The McCain family will be hosting this event annually in Meagan’s honor in hopes to bring to light what tragedy comes from impaired driving.

“Our lives changed forever on August 21, 2009 when Meagan was killed by a drunk driver,” said Meagan’s mother Donna McCain.

“We miss her everyday but are reassured by the promise that we will see her again in heaven. We are struggling to find new focus for our lives and are looking for ways to keep Meagan’s memory alive and to spread the word that drunk/impaired driving cannot be tolerated, the cost is too high.”

The event starts at noon on Saturday with barrel-racing and roping starts on Sunday at 10 a.m. There will be practice runs and vendors open any time after 9 a.m. on Saturday.

More information and details on the event can be found on the Meagan McCain Memorial Fund Facebook page.

The 2011 Memorial had over 300 barrel racers from all over the southeast. It is the largest barrel race in the district and a great one to watch as far as tough competition.

On Sunday, you will be able to watch a Match Roping between the 2010 Champion Austin Thomas and the 2011 Champion Cody Skelton.

Admission is free. There will be a large selection of vendors to choose from. And also a “goat-roping” arena for people who feel lucky.
