Mariah Jane “née Wilkey” Hunt

Mrs. Mariah Jane (née Wilkey) Hunt of Calhoun passed away on July 22, 2012, at Emory University Hospital.

Mrs. Hunt was born in Gordon County on May 20, 1923. She was one of four children born to Andy and Mary Ruth (née Mays) Wilkey.

Mrs. Hunt was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers: Bennie Price Wilkey and Andy K. Wilkey; a sister, Louise Isabell Miller; a husband, Gilbert Hunt Sr.; one daughter, Brenda Louise Hunt and one son, Gilbert Hunt Jr. Mrs. Hunt is survived by three children: Mary Ruth Wyatt of Calhoun, Mable Ann McClain of Griffin and James Walter Hunt of Calhoun; four grandchildren, Phillip Price Wyatt of Fla., James Brexley Wyatt of Washington D.C., Mariasha Konique Hunt and James Gilbert Hunt, both of Calhoun; two great grandchildren, Brexleigh and Isiah; nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.

Mrs. Hunt joined Allen Chapel AME Church in Calhoun the third Sunday in July, 1940, under the leadership of Pastor Buford. She served for several decades as a trustee and steward of the church. Mrs. Hunt retired from Springs Industries in 2001, after over 50 years of service. Her hobbies included baking, gardening, gospel note singing, crocheting, coin collecting and spending quality time with family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted by Wright Memorial Mortuary of Rome. The funeral was held at Allen Chapel AME Church, 227 King Street, Calhoun on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at 2 p.m. Interment took place at Pine Grove Cemetery in the Red Bud community.
