The board of directors of Northside Bank, with branches in Calhoun, announced Thursday, July 19, that Bobby Cox has been appointed chairman of the board. Since his retirement from the Atlanta Braves, Cox has become more actively involved with the bank.

“The staff has been working so hard and the board and I could not be more appreciative for what they’ve done,” said Cox. “We are a true Cinderella story, we were bent but not broken.”

Cox is excited about the opportunities for the Bank and has strong ties to Bartow County. Along with Northside Bank, he is involved with the new LakePoint Sports Complex project and spends much of his free time at his farm located in Adairsville, Georgia.

Cox was born in Tulsa, Okla. and began his baseball career with the Los Angeles Dodgers while attending Reedley Junior College during the off-season. Cox played with the New York Yankees in 1968 and 1969 but retired after the 1970 season due to injuries. Cox began his managerial career in the minor leagues in 1971 and was hired by Ted Turner in 1978 as the Atlanta Braves manager. Cox signed on as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays in 1982 and led the team to its first American League Division Championship in 1985. He returned to the Atlanta Braves in 1986 where he was manager until his retirement at the end of the 2010 season.

Cox has won manager of the Year in both the American and National Leagues and led the Atlanta Braves to 13 consecutive National League Division Titles, winning one World Series Championship in 1995. He is one of the top five “winningest” managers of all time.
