No, they aren’t singers or dancers, but the students at the Boys and Girls Club of Northwest Georgia’s Calhoun/Gordon County Unit do have lots of creative ability and it earned them $10,000.
On Saturday the local club celebrated winning the national Old Navy Funnovation Contest for charities after submitting a prize-winning video. The club received its prize money from celebrity Joey Lawrence.
“We’re very excited,” said Scorpio Denmon, Team Director of the local club. “Having them come here was great. To be in the contest, that was huge.”
Denmon was approached last December by associates at the Old Navy store in Calhoun and asked if the Boys and Girls Club would like to participate in the contest.
“They asked us to shoot a video, a 60 second commercial about what we would do with a $10,000 grant,” Denmon said.
The commercial was pretty straightforward. A script was written and the kids answered questions about using the $10,000.
The video was filmed and posted to Facebook and then the waiting game began.
“Three months later we found out we made it to finals in the Southeast region,” Denmon said.
“We were up against a group from an Oklahoma military base. On June 18, we found out that we won," he said.
The reward — in addition to the check —was Saturday’s party, complete with the celebrity appearances by the Old Navy Ambassadors, local DJ Kevin Casey and musical artists The VanLears. Those in attendance also received food and prizes.
Denmon said the prize money will be used to offset operations costs.
