SSG Shirley began his service in December 1975. His duty assignments have included six deployments, two humanitarian operations, one homeland security mission and several units of the Georgia Army National Guard including the 108th Armor BN. Calhoun from 1992-2002. He served in the Army National Guard Bureau in Arlington, VA and The Warrior Transition Unit in Ft. Stewart, Ga. combat operations included Desert Spring and Iraqi Freedom.
Of SSG Shirley’s 47 awards/ medals he has one Meritorious Service Medal, seven Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, two Humanitarian Medals, one Georgia Commendation Medal and various other Campaigns Medals/Service awards and ribbons.
SSG Shirley has retired to his home in the Ryo community with his wife of 33 years, Sherry Wilson Shirley. He has three adult daughters and one grandson. SSG Shirley is the son of the late Causby L. Shirley, Sr. and Jo Padgett Shirley, formally of Fairmount, Jacksonville, Fla. and Chattanooga, Tenn.
SSG Shirley’s plans for retirement are to continue in ministry to God and County in the civilian sector. He is a member of First Baptist Church of Fairmount and is a licensed and ordained Baptist minister. Civic activities include high school sports officiating in football, basketball, baseball and girls fast pitch softball.
SSG Shirley considers it to be his greatest honor to have served the United States of America and the American people through the U.S. Army, the Georgia Army National Guard, and the Chaplain Corps.
