Blackwell will fill the vacancy left by Chief Justice George H. Carley who is set to resign July 17, 2012. Blackwell will be the 92nd justice sworn into the Georgia Supreme Court since its inception in 1845. While Judge Blackwell will become the 88th associate justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia, he will technically be the 92nd justice. That is because there were four chief justices who never served as associate justices, according to the release.
"Judge Blackwell has served on the Court of Appeals since his appointment in 2010 by former Gov. Sonny Perdue," said the release.
