month old husky mix puppy that was abandoned at Chandler Cemetery in Calhoun in violation of state
law. Chandler will be available for adoption from ARL on July 7th.
On June 18th, a concerned citizen visiting the grave of a family member at the cemetery, observed an
individual in a white Honda Civic stop, open the door, put the puppy on the ground and then drive off.
The witness was so shocked by the action that she was unable to get the license plate number on the
car. However, she put a call in to ARL who willingly took the puppy in after checking with Gordon County
Animal Control.
“Unfortunately, I’m not surprised,” says Judy Lawson, president of ARL. “It is very common for people to
abandon dogs and cats on the side of the road, in cemeteries, in parks. The worst part of it is that many
of these animals die slow and painful deaths, because they can’t care for themselves or are hit by cars.
Luckily, Chandler survived because a responsible person saw what happened and acted humanely.”
In Georgia (4-11-15.1), it is against the law for any person knowingly and intentionally to abandon any
domesticated animal upon any public or private property or public right of way. Sue Henson, Director
of Gordon County Animal Control asks the public to help her enforce this law. “If anyone sees an animal
being left or thrown from a vehicle and can get a license plate or identify the person or persons leaving the
animals, notify us (Gordon County Animal Control) and we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.”
Despite his abandonment, Chandler is proving to be a happy, healthy, loving and playful pup. He is at ARL’s
facility, receiving veterinary care and getting for the big day when he can go home to his forever family.
Chandler will be available on Saturday, July 7th. Those interested in adopting Chandler should contact Judy
Lawson at (678) 848-1889 or at arlofnwga@gmail.com.
